Be cunning, play brilliant, and learn how to play craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights played Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
