Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
