Be clever, play smart, and become versed in craps the correct way!
Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
