Be brilliant, play smart, and pickup craps the ideal way!
Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French headed south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
