Be brilliant, play clever, and become versed in craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
