Be clever, play clever, and pickup craps the correct way!
Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French moved down south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
